I always fill a friends birdfeeder when ever I have spare time. I love watching the sparrows. The doves come around too. The colorful scrub jays are one of my favorite to watch. I watch them from a window and they always seem to know I'm watching them and sometimes get spooked. Do birds have good eyesite?

Re: Bird Feeder Needs Seed
Wed, July 11, 2007 - 10:25 PMsome birds have especially good eyesight, particularly birds of prey which can see their tiny prey, mice and such moving down below when they lock on their target and swoop in for the kill. ever heard the phrase, eagle-eyed? It would make sense that smaller birds like sparrows and warblers also have good eyesight, if not as good as raptors. Though there is concern with windows and birds, as they are not able to distinguish that there is an invisible barrier made of glass, and they fly into them. This is a real problem as many birds die from flying in to windows. -

Re: Bird Feeder Needs Seed
Wed, September 17, 2008 - 9:40 PMThanks for the feedback I prefer to be in my little world of the small birds that feed on seed and insects. I do love hawks and raptors though, when I was growing up we befriended a hawk and would feed it ground hamburger when it would visit and perch on the backyard fence. Civilization is taking over so much of the open spaces to build houses, businesses etc... there will be no place for these animals to go one day, how sad ! We have racoons that dig in the dumpster where I live, but they are not to smart and run out into the street and die also. I saw one the other night, just as it was getting dark and it was not a pretty sight a car got it.
