Rock Doves

I was wondering if Rock Doves have been renamed to Rock Pigeons? Saw Rock Pigeon in a new bird book and was wondering if this was wrong or not. Thanks.

In my book, which is also a new one, they are still Rock Doves, which name refers to the truly wild cliff dwelling coast line bird. The town dwelling variety which is a cross breed from the same stock is referred to as the feral pidgeon. The true wild rock doves feature a white rump and double black bar across the pale grey inner wings, whereas the feral pidgeon has at least 228 named varieties and has been a domesticated bird for thousands of years. Also known as the messenger pidgeon or homing pidgeon.
