Why are there supposedly absolutely no sightings of black-billed magpies in the yellow-billed magpies' range, or vice versa, I wonder. And why are the yellow-billed magpies dying off right now? I literally see them dying. Are the black-billed magpies dying off too, where they live?

Tue, November 8, 2005 - 12:05 PMThe magpie die off may well be west nile virus; the corvids are notoriously susceptible to it. -

Re: Magpie Differences
Tue, November 8, 2005 - 3:39 PMSo are we supposed to report dead magpies to the CDC or health department or something? I know you're supposed to report dead crows and ravens. I hadn't heard anything about magpies, but it would make sense to do so.
Of course here on the San Francisco peninsula I don't see a lot of magpies, dead OR alive. -

Tue, November 8, 2005 - 8:35 PMhmmm.....I'd probably start w/ local Fish and Game and see what they say.
Here in the SF Sunset District, the crows and ravens are healthy and fit and sassy as can be.

Re: Magpie Differences
Thu, November 10, 2005 - 8:20 AMY'know the whole yellow-black billed magpie thing is a genetic issue. The Yellows are essentially in an isolated area bc California is surrounded by a lot of mountains and only occasionally to black-billed mp's get in. When they do, their genetic profile gets diluted after a generation or two. Same thing if a yellow gets out. You can see a similar issue in squirrels, especially in the Grand Canyon, there's actually a great example of genetic islands there. -

Mon, November 14, 2005 - 12:30 PMVery nice, Y'know if you ever find yourself training for a seminar of something at Aikido of San Leandro, there is a small group of eucalyptus trees a couple blocks away with a cortege of about fifty turkey voltures, it's very cool when they all take off at once.
